David Crosby hrával s The Byrds, Stephen Stills byl zpěvákem a kytaristou ve skupině Buffalo Springfield, v níž působil i Neil Young, a konečně Graham Nash spoluzakládal jednu z nejdůležitějších britských skupin šesté dekády dvacátého století The Hollies. Společně vytvořili superskupinu, jež se proslavila složitými vokálními harmoniemi a jež měla zásadní vliv na utváření americké hudební scény a kultury.
