Kapela bola založená v roku 1981 v Los Angeles spevákom a gitaristom Jamesom Hetfieldom a bubeníkom Larsom Ulrichom a väčšinu svojej kariéry žila v San Franciscu.Rýchle tempá, inštrumentály a agresívne muzikantstvo z nich urobili jednu zo zakladajúcich „veľkej štvorky“ thrash metalových kapiel, popri Megadeth, Anthrax a Slayer. Aktuálnu zostavu Metallicy tvoria zakladajúci členovia a hlavní skladatelia Hetfield a Ulrich, dlhoročný hlavný gitarista Kirk Hammett a basgitarista Robert Trujillo.
