Edge of Sanity bola švédska death metalová skupina, ktorá je popri Opeth všeobecne považovaná za prvú, ktorá spája extrémne metalové štýly ako death a black metal s progresívnym rockom. Skupinu založil Dan Swanö v roku 1989 a skončila v roku 2003. "The Spectral Sorrows" je tretí štúdiový album, ktorý Börje Forsberg nahral v júli až auguste 1993 a vydal ho Black Mark Production v roku 1993. Basgitarista Anders Lindberg sa na albume neobjavuje, keďže dokončoval svoju povinnú vojenskú službu v tom čase. The Spectral Sorrows pokračujú v progresii Edge of Sanity k progresívnejšiemu a melodickejšiemu death metalovému zvuku. Album obsahuje väčšie zameranie na čisté vokály ako predchádzajúce diela skupiny, konkrétne na ich cover verzie „Blood of My Enemies“ od Manowar a „Sacrificed“, pričom tá druhá má viac čisto zaspievaný gotický štýl pripomínajúci The Sisters of Mercy.
